Mackeys Public House in DC a great place to hang out

October 21, 2008 · Filed Under Food & Beverage · 1 Comment

I was just searching for a nice place to relax after a crazy day at work and found one near my hotel, Mackey’s Public House.

This was a great place to read the newspaper, listen to some great music, have a wonderful dinner, and drink some good beer.

Found a place to collapse, and I ordered a Smithwicks.  Then got a menu and it looked wonderful. There were a lot of good things.

I first noticed the potato cheddar soup and I had to have that to start my meal. I then found the entree’s and had to have the Shepard’s Pie.  I was going to get the bowl of soup, but the waitress recommended I just get the cup. I was glad I did.

The soup was delicious.  It had a good flavor and hit the spot.  But a cup was enough and a bowl would have been too much.

The main dish arrived and I ordered another beer, this time a Guinness.

The shepard’s pie was wonderful. It was warm and tasteful. It was full of meat and vegetables.  And it was quite tasteful with the Guinness.

After all this, I needed something sweet and I migrated to the bread pudding.  This was good and hit the spot. It had a good consistency.

This was the perfect spot to relax after a long day and recharge your batteries.  If you are looking for a place to hang out with friends or just relax, check out Mackey’s Pub on L Street in the Northwest area of Washington, DC.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe a definite place to visit in Washington DC

October 19, 2008 · Filed Under Food & Beverage · Comment

I have been distracted from writing about my experiences at restaurants I visit and I have missed writing about them. It is time to get back to that and I want to start with my visit this evening to Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe.

Kramerbooks is becoming a place I need to visit whenever I am in D.C. Their selection of books is something that you don’t usually find in the chain stores.  I always find something different to take with me and read.

I had eaten at Afterwords Cafe before and enjoyed it, so I thought I might as well combine the two and find something and then grab dinner.

Well I checked out the books and nothing jumped out at me.  They seemed to have a lot of books about the election and I am quite tired of that. So I grabbed the new “The Atlantic” magazine. Sometimes that is almost like a book.

With reading material secured, I walked through the store and to the cafe.  I got settled in my seat and was soon enjoying a Peak Organic Ale from Maine. Quite tasty. (If you go to their website, they have several ales, just don’t know which one I had.)

For dinner I started with a mescaline salad that included apples, mushrooms, walnuts and a wonderful vinaigrette.  I had to have every last bit. For the main dish I had the crab cake platter. It was delicious.

The crab cake is served on top of fresh pasta topped with roasted corn, tomato, sweet peppers & scallions. It has the right about of spice. It all flows together for a wonderful taste.

The service was good and being a Sunday night they were training new waitstaff, but that was not a problem. Both were quite attentive.

If are in DC and find yourself in the Dupont Circle area, find Kramerbooks & the Afterwords Cafe for a wonderful read and nice meal.

Denver Post backs Obama -Rocky Mountain News supports conversation, not one candidate

October 19, 2008 · Filed Under Media, Politics · Comment

In today’s paper, the Denver Post officially endorsed Barack Obama for President. Although it was not a unanimously choice by their editorial board.

Dan Haley, the editorial page editor for the Post, had a real good column explaining how they made the decision and deliberated about it over the last few weeks.

He explained that it wasn’t a Republican vs Democrat issue, but “The Post is an independent newspaper that doesn’t care what’s good for Republicans or what’s good for Democrats. We owe nothing to either party.”

He went on to explain that, “Endorsements are meant to stoke a public dialogue”.

According to Haley, he is not so sure of Obama will be able to “change” the country and also feels that the politics are further left than his own beliefs.

Just for the record, the Denver Post has now supported seven Democrats and seven Republicans.

But the Rocky Mountain News took a different approach.  In a column in Saturday’s paper, publisher John Temple announced that the Rocky would not be endorsing anyone.

Instead the Rocky would be providing information on both candidates and have their readers foster their own opinions.

Temple rationalizes this by looking back at the state of newspapers. At one time, the newspaper was the only or the main way for the public to get their news.  But now, there are many ways for the public to get information to help them make a decision.

But we live in a different world today, a world where citizens have a wealth of information available to them. If anything, what they need is a trusted source to help them evaluate that information and come to their own conclusions.

So we have two newspapers, two different paths trying to foster thought and debate over the issues so people can determine to vote for who they think is best.

My opinion? I think the Rocky Mountain News is taking the best approach.  Because of the amount of information on the internet, we don’t need a newspaper’s editorial board to provide an opinion to generate thought.

What people are looking for is an unbiased source of information that we can then make up our mind on who we think is best to represent us or if we support or don’t support an issue.

I think Temple summarizes it best, “In the end we’ll leave it to you to come to your own conclusion, trusting that’s what you want and believing this newspaper’s editorial page can be most valuable to you if it helps you reach an informed decision, with an emphasis on informed. After all, ultimately that’s our job. It’s not to pick presidents, senators or representatives.”

Do you have any thoughts?

I don’t get the people who think Obama is an Arab and/or Muslim

October 13, 2008 · Filed Under Politics · Comment

I just don’t get or understand the people in this country and how they think that Barack Obama is an Arab or Muslim.

John McCain was right to take the microphone from the women who was ignorant and asked the question last Friday.

I just want to say that I am supporting John McCain because he is the candidate that falls within my beliefs and I feel that he is best to lead this country at this time.

It is not because I think Obama is a Muslim or terrorist like others believe.  I just think some of his policies will cause the deficit to grow a lot more than it is and that he does not have the leadership experience to do the job.  He has also made some bad decisions to associate and listen to the wrong people over time.

Obama is a wonderful family man and father.  He is a Christian.  No where close to the Arab or Muslim that people are scared of just because of his name.

And what would be the problem if he was an Arab or Muslim? Is that a problem?  I don’t believe so.

I have met and associated with many people who are arabs, muslims, etc.  In fact, for all you doubters out there, there are Arab-Christians in this world.

There are many wonderful people in this world who are Muslim.  They are nice, decent, and religious people.  The problem is a few people who perpetuate to follow the Koran, but actually don’t understand its teachings.  They are a small, radical fringe.

The United States of America is one of the world leaders and we need to vote in the best person to do the job.  That is why I am voting for John McCain.  I think he can do it.

But if Obama wins, he is our President and I will support him in that role.

This country has come a long way over the last 30-40 years.  But it still has a long way to go.  We need to move beyond someones skin color, religion, ethnicity, etc. The ignorance needs to end and it ends now.

This ignorance just makes the entire country look stupid to the rest of the world. I just don’t see how it is still around in this wonderful country. It was not the way I was brought up.

Rocky Mountain News Supports McCain’s Health Plan

October 13, 2008 · Filed Under Politics · Comment

Dueling med plans : McCain’s offers consumers more long-term choice.

An interesting look at the health care plans and they feel that McCain’s is the best for the long-term, something a health care plan should be.

Contrary to Barack Obama’s ads, I will not see an increase in tax liability, I will see a net tax benefit.

McCain’s health care tax plan provides choice for families, where the choice belongs. It shouldn’t be the choice of government on what health care plan I use.

Obama tries to play the $5,000 going to health insurance companies and not into your pocket. Well it is for health care and should go there and the nice thing is you get to choose what is best for you and your family.

Under McCain’s proposal, if you don’t use the full $5,000 for insurance, the remaining can go into a health savings account.

According to Politifact and the nonpartisan Urban Institute, McCain’s plan would benefit lower income individuals and families over higher-income individuals and families.

An independent analysis from the nonpartisan Urban Institute confirms that: “In general, lower-income people with health insurance would receive benefits from the credit that would be well in excess of the value that they receive from today’s tax exemption. The gains are much smaller for higher-income people.”

I think that it is nice McCain’s plan leaves it up to the individuals to choose their plan and provide a tax credit for that, providing more of a benefit to those of lower income than higher without significantly impacting the deficit.

RMN: Borderline Calls leave Broncos steamed

October 13, 2008 · Filed Under Sports · Comment

Denver Broncos - Borderline Calls Leave Broncos Steamed.

I think Dre Bly said it best,

“But, hey, the first couple games, I guess they’ve been evaluating us and said, you know, we won games we shouldn’t have won so I guess they’re going to get a call against us.”

On the long third down, which the Broncos had stopped the Jaguars, Bly had the perfect outside position and Jaguars receiver Reggie Williams ran him over. Williams made the contact, not Bly.

Then on a crucial play on the Jaguars last drive, Manual was called for pass interference by an official who was blocked by the play. He couldn’t see if there was contact or not.

But he made the call anyway.  There was an official in front of him who didn’t throw the flag and probably had a better angle on it.

Oh well. The Broncos benefitted from some calls earlier this year. I guess this is a way for the NFL and the officials to make up those calls to the rest of the league.
