Elk Public House in Spokane

If you are ever in Spokane, Wash., you need to go have lunch or dinner at the Elk Public House.

This restaurant reminds you of many public houses that appear over Europe. The music is wonderful, the beer selection is incredible, and the food hits the spot.

The dish to try is the Reuben Sandwich. I have had many Reubens across the country, but whenever I am going through Spokane I stop and have one. It is warm and the house made sauerkraut is some of the best that I had.

The Reuben goes best with the roasted corn pasta salad. It has a good spice and taste and is unique to the Elk Public House.

To wash it all down it has a wide selection of beer, but it does not come better if you have a Mac n Jac Amber. It is only on draft and available only in the northwest.

If you are in Spokane, make a visit to the Elk Public House, you won’t regret it.

Dvorak Nails it with Deep Linking

Deep linking is something that every blogger and most all people who manage websites do. They link to web addresses other than the top level domain.

In a column in PC Mag from December 27, 2006, Hate Deep Linking? Lock the Door, Dummy!, John Dvorak hits it on the nose when if you don’t want it, don’t let them do it.

I agree that if this ever gets enforced across the web, the internet as we know it will go away. It hits at the very basic building blocks of why the Internet has taken off. It allows information to be linked and shared and other links, tying it all together. That is why it is called the web.

If you don’t want people deep linking to your site, use the technology that is available today to block it. If you allow it, I agree with Dvorak:

The message a judge should hear is that if a site technically allows deep linking, then it is tacitly and overtly allowing it—perhaps encouraging it. The links are fair game, period. If it tries to block it, then it is not allowing it. That’s that. Simple. It works. No more complaining.

Judges who will be ruling on this need to understand the technology that they are ruling on and make rules that apply. If someone tells you to stop linking to their site, respect them and take it down. But if you have site and don’t want people to deep link into your site, then block it. If you don’t, you can’t complain.

Colorado to Have Open Senate Seat, Allard Retires

Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado has announced that he will honor his two-term promise to the voters of Colorado and he will not seek a third term as a U.S. Senator.

This will create quite of bit of interest in the next election cycle. Not only will Colorado have this open seat, there will be big race for President and Denver will be hosting the Democratic National Convention.

Here is a quote from Senator Allard from the Denver Post, “In an age when promises are cast away as quickly as yesterday’s newspaper, I believe a promise made is a promise kept,” said Allard. “The people of Colorado placed their trust in me based on my promise to them to serve no more than two terms, and it was very important to me to not dishonor that trust.”

This race will be wide open, but it will be hard for Republicans to win this seat. For the Republicans, names mentioned include former Governor Bill Owens and former Congressmen Scott McInnis and Bob Schaeffer.

For the Democrats current Congressman Mark Udall has already announced that he is running and maybe current Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will definitely be mentioned. I am wondering if current Congressman John Salazar will try and join his brother in the U.S. Senate.

Slapstick had this to say about Allard stepping down. “A true man of his word, Sen. Wayne Allard honored his self-imposed two-term pledge. Unlike senate lifers, blowhards (they enjoy the sound of their own voices), and presidential aspirants, Allard carved out a quiet record as a citizen-legislator, unfazed by the glitz and power-politics of DC.”

The RealClearPolitics Blog already has some thoughts on how the election for this seat will go:  “This is probably good news for GOP hopes of holding on to this seat, as Allard would have faced an uphill battle against the likely Democratic nominee Rep. Mark Udall. If former two-term Governor Bill Owens were to throw his hat in the ring, Republicans would probably be favored to hold the seat. The other prominent names mentioned on the GOP side at this early stage would likely be considered slight underdogs against Udall.”

It will definitely be a fun election, but my thoughts now are it will be hard for the Republicans to beat Representative Mark Udall for this seat.

Boxer Said What?

I cannot believe Senator Barbara Boxer of California told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, “You’re not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with immediate family. So who pays the price?”

Single women have come a long-way in making strides in the business and professional communities.  Secretary Rice does not need to have kids to work and make decisions.  She fully understands what happens when she makes recommendations to the President.

What gets me is that the main stream media is covering it up.  All the mentions in the main stream newspapers are that it happened as Secretary Rice was grilled by Congress.  What would have happened if a male had done this to Secretary Rice, or what if a Republican Senator had done this to a Democrat?  There is a double-standard going here and it is not right.

Has it come to the point that the only way that you can be a good leader of this country is that you must have kids?  I don’t think so.  People are smart and no what the consequences of their decisions that affect this country.  They don’t have to have kids to make good ones.

Secretary Boxer and the Democrats are completely out-of-touch with what is going on in this world.  To question the Secretary of State in this manner is tasteless and unprofessional.

I think this is setting the stage for a controversial two years when we should be having a good and vigorous debate about the state of our country and our place in this world.  There were thoughts that this might happen, and it appears to be coming true.
