2009 Colorado Rockies Commercials are now out

The 2009 Colorado Rockies television commercials are now out for you to view on their website. They will begin playing on FSN Rocky Mountain, 9 News, and other Comcast cable channels on March 9.

They are hilarious, show the players in a different light, and do a good job of selling the team.

This year, my particular favorite is the wedding mound visit. It doesn’t get better than that. Watch out for the surprise at the end.

These commercials really make me laugh.

Rocky Mountain News stopped publishing but it didn’t die

The Rocky Mountain News may have ceased publishing, but it didn’t die. It still lives on at iwantmyrocky.com.

Several of the staff have moved over here and are now publishing stories online. It looks like a great site and stories are now starting to stream in.

Here is an excerpt from their About Us Page on what they are doing.

We launched iwantmyrocky.com to fight for the Rocky. Through this Web site and other efforts, the staff of theRocky sought to:

  • Preserve and protect the editorial voice of the Rocky in our community.
  • Preserve and protect the legacy of the Rocky and its historical archives, which provide a window to the infancy of our state and the city of Denver.
  • Fight for the jobs of more than 200 Coloradans and the many others that would be affected by the newspaper’s closure.

The paper may not be printing anymore, but we’re still journalists and still eager to report, edit, design and do all those things that we loved to do for the newspaper. So now, iwantmyrocky.com will be a gathering spot for Rocky alumni and readers, bringing you the news of your favorite reporters and columnists and even a scoop of two that you might have seen on the pages of the Rocky.

While there is news, sports, and Arts and Entertainment on the I Want My Rocky site, I am particularly intrigued by a partner site called Inside the Rockies.  the fact that Tracy Ringolsby, Jack Etkin, and Steven Foster are writing about the Colorado Rockies really excites me.

Where can you get information from writers who have been covering the Colorado Rockies since before their first game in Denver and baseball longer than that. I always loved their coverage of the Rockies. It got to the point and observations of the game were made that no one else made because of their experience.

It also doesn’t hurt that Ringolsby is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Also Drew Litton is online also. You can see his old drawings plus new ones at is site drewlitton.com. I think the cartoon he drew of Jay Cutler sucking his thumb captured the events of last weekend between Cutler and the Denver Broncos.

I look forward to reading more from I Want My Rocky, Inside the Rockies and viewing the Drew Litton editorial cartoons. They are good writers and artists. I hope you check them out too.

Baseball is back!

I just want to make a quick post and highlight that baseball is back and I am looking forward to another season.

You know spring is around the corner when spring training games start. Catchers and pitchers reporting is great, but it is even better when the games start.

I am looking forward to another season of the Colorado Rockies. It doesn’t matter where we think they will finish or how upset we are about off-season trades or acquisitions.

Every team starts out fresh and tied on opening day. Here is to another season of baseball and Go Rockies!

I am disappointed in the Colorado Rockies…

I just want to say that I am disappointed in the management of the Colorado Rockies.  They failed to show committment to winning to their players and most importantly their fans.

Why? Who knows, we may never know.

The reason? Because they failed to sign Matt Holliday to a long-term deal and traded him away to the Oakland Athletics.

Matt Holliday is a big-time, major league player whose type only comes along every once in a while.  They should have made every effort to sign him.

The Rockies did get three players in return from the Athletics. One is a left-handed starting pitcher who struggled last year, but in looking at the offense of the A’s, it is no wonder he struggled.  The second is a reliever who struggled last year and may be on the downward trend.  And third is a prospect who may develop into a great player, but who has struggled at the major league.

Matt Holliday is gone and I wish him well.  But the Rockies management is to blame and should be held accountable.

The fans came out and showed support that was unrivaled except for the first couple of years.  The Rockies management had a chance to show their fans they were committed to winning, but they just blew them off.

We’ll see next summer how it pays off.  I hope it is good, but I am doubtful.

Major League Baseball, get some better umpires

Major League Baseball, please get some better umpires.  In tonight’s game between the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins they blew a couple of calls that cost the Colorado Rockies. Luckily the Rockies now have a 5-0 lead.

The first blown call, Ubaldo Jimenez was up and he foul tipped a ball into the dirt and into the glove of the catcher with two strikes.  It should have been a foul ball, but it wasn’t.

The umpires were not paying attention and ruled it in out saying the catcher caught the ball.  Even the first base umpire, Bob Davidson who was out of baseball for a while because of misjudgments, didn’t see it hit the dirt called him out.

Give me a break!

It gets even worse.

With a runner on first base and no outs, Garrett Atkins hit one to center field.  The umpire ruled that it was a catch and they doubled off the runner for two outs.  The replays clearly showed that it was a short-hop and not a catch.

The umpire who was supposed to get into position to see the play from a different angle, didn’t move and wasn’t in the right position.  So when Clint Hurdle came out to question the call, the umpires did the obligatory gathering and still ruled them out.

Umpires never over-rule themselves and will protect the original call.  It is just stupid.

Major League Baseball always keeps secret how they deal with umpires, but that should change.  They need to be open.  They also need to institute instant replay immediately.

The umpires are doing a disservice to the the players, the Game, and the fans.  If Major League Baseball should hold the game to the highest standard, when they have umpires who can’t do the same, they should be gone.

In the meantime, let the technology help them out and be used in the games. NOW!

The Colorado Rockies stand still on the trading deadline

The Colorado Rockies have stood still on the Major League Baseball trading deadline and then proceed to get blown out in Miami by the Florida Marlins.   It is currently 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

I am wondering if this was a good thing or not.  Their pitching has been great lately, but the bullpen has blown some games and tonight their starting pitcher didn’t even last two innings.

Nothing is wrong with their offense, but there pitching has been suspect.  In my opinion, it would have been nice if they would have gone out and done something.

But I guess nothing wasn’t there.  Let’s see what happens the rest of the way this season.

The Colorado Rockies are embarrasing, just plain embarrassing

I just want to say the All Star Break couldn’t have come soon enough for the Colorado Rockies.  It has been a horrible first-half.  I don’t think they could have played any worse.

It gets embarrassing because the last two game they played were on National Television, yesterday on Fox Sports and tonight on ESPN, in front of biggest media market of the world, New York City.

The Colorado Rockies, just off a World Series appearance, are now 39-57 and 8.5 games back in the standings.  In the last three games against the New York Mets, they had 11 hits and 1 run.  That is pathetic. Continue reading
