DIA de-icers get faulty training : Airlines & Aerospace

DIA de-icers get faulty training : Airlines & Aerospace : The Rocky Mountain News

This is a report that aired this evening on CBS 4 News and was put together by Brian Maass.

This is appalling to me.  I fly a lot, including in the winter, and rely on de-icers to make sure that my flight is safe.  I also rely on the airlines and Federal Air Administration to ensure that my flight is safe.

Because they were not checking up on their contractor, Servisair, they passed everyone by giving them the answers.  That is not acceptable.  It shouldn’t take an investigative report from the CBS affiliate in Denver to uncover this.

The company should be checking up on their instructors, including planting people in the class, to make sure they are following the rules.  In addition, the FAA and the airlines (who hired Servisair to de-ice planes) should do independent checks to ensure that make sure Servisair is doing their job.

I must let you know Servisair was appalled by what they saw on the tape and suspended and eventually fired the person who administered the tests and called everyone back to take a refresher course and re-take the tests.  But to me, it is a little late.

Let’s just hope that there are no problems this year with de-icing planes.

Youth football team gets into playoffs, then removed

9NEWS – Article – Youth football team gets into playoffs, then removed

This is just sad for the kids who were supposed to play in the game, the Panther Gold.

The parents of the team that was banned from the playoffs should be ashamed of themselves.  Their coach violated the rules, the team needs to abide by the rules and deal with the consequences.

What does this say to the kids?  I think one of the kids said it perfectly in the piece, that it is ok to cheat.

Rockies Tickets, anyone?

Rockies tickets, anyone?

This is a great opinion column in today’s Rocky Mountain News that addresses the ethics of what the Rockies did and how the Rockies handled distributed tickets.

From a business and public relations standpoint, the Rockies messed up.  They limited the tickets to a few who could get in to the computer system.  It created a lot of unhappy people.

From what I understand what happened, once people got in to purchase tickets, they could stay in there and purchase tickets.  This alienated many of the Rockies fans who for some reason were unable to get in. Continue reading

Builder going bankrupt, homeowners on their own

9NEWS – Builder going bankrupt, homeowners on their own

More on Neumann Homes and their bankruptcy. They have completely abandoned their developments and are leaving homes unfinished. These are homes that have been sold to people who are now out their down payments.

Also, homeowners who closed within the last year are now out the one-year warranty that they have paid for. We utilized the one year warranty to fix little things that affected our house. Problems with toilets, the wood floors, some concrete work, and problems with the windows. We were able to get them fixed. But now, that won’t be covered by Neumann for those other homeowners.

Finally many homeowners are in limbo because Neumann Homes has actually not filed for Chapter 11 yet. They have announced that they will, but they haven’t yet. So there is confusion in the air. Continue reading

Neumann Homes filing for bankruptcy

Neumann Homes filing for bankruptcy

Well it is official.  Neumann Homes has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  They have closed all their production, sales, and customer service offices.  They got hit hard by the housing slump and it looks like some acquisitions that they shouldn’t have made.

According to a story in the Denver Post, Plummeting sales level builder, Neumann had planned on selling over 1,000 homes and were only able to sell 81 of them.

We have some unfinished homes in our neighborhood (Harmony Park) and they were to be auctioned off on October 3.  But it is not known how that sell went.  It would nice to see them finished, but I don’t think that will happen soon with this filing.

MSNBC Interactive News Acquires Newsvine

MSNBC Interactive News Acquires Newsvine – washingtonpost.com

I wonder how this will continue to work for Newsvine.  They are a good company that is doing something intriguing and allowing people to comment on the news stories.  With MSNBC acquiring them, what does it mean for Newsvine?

It appears that they are not making any big changes and even incorporating some of Newsvine’s technology into their own website.  According to Dan Gillmor of the Center for Citizen Media Blog, feels that this is a good thing, “…pulling Newsvine under its wing make perfect sense.”

We, as bloggers and the net community, need to make sure that this is a good thing for Newsvine and MSNBC does not diminish the impact that Newsvine has on the net.
