Legislature Should Allow Amendment 41 to be Fixed
The Colorado State Legislature just passed a bill and sent to the Senate that would fix Amendment 41 that was passed last fall by the voters.
To summarize, Amendment 41restricts the gifts that state and local employees and their families can accept. But this has turned into a problem because it has been interpreted to apply to children who accept scholarships and university professors who receive awards. The bill looks like it might stall in the Senate because they are miffed that the House leaders didn’t inform them. Give me a break. Everyone is busy and to allow this to stall because of stupid turf issues is beyond me. This is an Amendment that needs to be fixed and fixed now.
We are losing quality state workers because they want to be able to send their kids to college or they are flaunting the law and hoping they don;t get caught.
Fix this now so the intent of the law can be followed, but allow families to accept scholarships so they can afford to send their kids to college.
